Do I need Pre-emergent?
The value of pre-emergent herbicide continues to be an active debate at neighborhood barbecues but oddly enough never a debate within the turf management community. Most consumers appreciate seeing weeds wilt after a post-emergent herbicide is applied, but the idea that a pre-emergent herbicide reduces the number of weeds needed to be killed is hard for folks to understand. This is especially true when there always seems to be some late spring breakthrough in weeds….even when you are disciplined with your pre-emergent program.
In order for pre-emergent herbicides to be effective it is important to understand the following:
- Do not apply pre-emergent in areas where over-seeding has been done within the last 6o days
- Do not apply pre-emergent in areas you intend to over-seed in the next 60 days.
- For best results follow the application directions. Most recommend watering in for best results.
The truth is that in a comprehensive lawn program pre-emergent prepares the turf for a strong growing season and is only one part of the program. It allows existing grass to fill in areas that otherwise would be occupied by weeds and as we all know…a healthy, strong and thick turf is the best way to prevent weeds.
A good comparative argument for pre-emergent herbicide is the argument for eating right during a weight loss plan. Of course you could always exercise for 8 hours and burn 10,000 calories a day allowing you to eat whatever you want…..or you could eat right AND exercise. Both can get you to your goal but one is a healthier and better strategy…..which is similar to a complete lawn care program that includes pre-emergent herbicide!
